Quality of Sunflower Achenes Crude Oil During Storage

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of sunflower oil extracted from achenes subjected to storage for different periods (0, 3, 6, and 9 months) and in different types of packaging (PP, HDPE, PET, and P. Multi). The oil extracted from sunflower achenes was analyzed for oil content, acidity index, peroxide index, and iodine index. The design used was completely randomized with three replications. Fluctuations in moisture content were observed for all packaging types studied. It was noted that the highest water loss occurred in achenes stored in P. Multi, followed by the PP packaging. Packaging and storage time did not have a significant influence on the oil content extracted from sunflower achenes and the iodine index. However, an increase in the acidity index of sunflower oil was observed during storage, with PET packaging causing the most significant increase. On the other hand, the packaging types influenced the peroxide index of the oil extracted from sunflower achenes, with HDPE and PET packaging showing the highest indices at the end of the storage period. Regarding the average values of the iodine index, no significant differences were observed among the packaging types, and throughout the storage period.
